Water in the Oil
Question: I am getting water in the oil and exhaust system. This is an oil cooled bike. I am at a loss, I don’t understand this... {Patrick, Pembrokeshire, UK 2000 Suzuki 1200S Bandit SKI}
Answer: The cause of water in both the oil and exhaust of an oil cooled bike is water condensation. When you park a bike, still hot from riding, in a cool damp garage or alleyway, or put a waterproof cover on it right away, the residual heat in the engine will cause condensation.
The condensation creates tiny water droplets to collect under the valve cover. They then travel to the airbox where they collect in the air box drain with the oil. The water is removed during normal maintenance because you always empty the air box drain when you change your oil, right?
Water also condenses and collects in the exhaust system. This is perfectly normal. It happens to all bikes to some degree. Most people just do not notice it.
The UK is not known for being especially dry. With Pembrokeshire so close to the coast, it is understandable that you would have a moisture problem.
My suggestion to you is to let your bike cool down completely before covering it or putting it away. If it is feasible you may also want to address the location where you store your bike. Better ventilation or a dehumidifier may also help to alleviate your problem.
