I have a over charging problem. My battery gets so hot that it totally shorts out and blows everything electrical. Headlight, tail light, speedometer, fuel pump, fuel pump relay.
Had it tested and the charging @13.8 vdc @ 5000 RPM. with loads on 11.4 amps. Have not had it checked under a load. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks. {Richard, California, USA - 2000 Yahama V-Star 1100, XVS1100}
The battery voltage charging values you describe are ok. There are within specifications. It sounds like your V-Star’s
Rectifier – Regulator, also know as the
voltage regulator is faulty.
When a rectifier – regulator stops functioning properly, it allows the voltage running through bike to
spike well over 13v (13 volts). These power spikes burn out your electrical components.
Light bulbs in your headlight and tail lights would probably be the first to go. The tiny filaments are sensitive.
Fortunately, the rectifier-regulator used on your V-Star is still available, as it is utilized in many Yamaha power sports products. The OEM Yamaha part number is
5BN-81960-00-00.
You should expect to pay around $100 for a
new one.
A quick search of
eBay
shows that used, it will run about $50.
