Question:
I had someone else take the head off, so we could change out the gaskets.
No cracks in the head, everything looks good. That person is not around, so do I have to have the piston in any certain position when I put the head back on? {Rico, CA

Answer:
Yes, there is a “certain position” for the piston. The
majority of pistons will have an arrow that will point towards the exhaust pipe.

You may need to clean any carbon build up off the piston with carburetor or choke cleaner and a soft bristle brush to see it. A regular toothbrush works well for this. It’s always a good idea to put a shop towel around the rod to cover the lower engine and protect it from any falling bits of dirt and carbon.
