No Power
Question:
I put a new battery in the bike, and I get no power. No lights. Not anything. Thanks. {Lynda, Landers, CA 1980 Suzuki GS1000}
Answer:
Is it possible that the reason for no power after a battery change is that you bought a battery that was not charged? Probably not, OK moving on.
Please check to make sure that the battery is not in backwards. The red wire from the solenoid goes to the positive terminal on the battery. The positive terminal is either red, surrounded by a red decal or has a + symbol next to it.
If the battery is charged and properly oriented, check for a blown fuse. Under the left side cover you will find your electric parts holder plate holding a plastic case containing your fuses. Carefully remove them one at a time and check to see if they are blown. Replace any that look less than perfect. You can find fuses at any auto parts store for a few dollars.
If you have found that the battery was hooked up backwards, go ahead and check your fuses before you start the bike.
This applies for a no power situation in any of the four GS1000 models made for 1980. They are the GS1000E, GS1000G, GS1000GL and GS1000S.
