Question:
Can a engine flywheel cover for an 82-83 550 GPZ mount properly to an 81? {Brandon, IN 1981Kawasaki GPZ 550}
Answer:
The 1981 KZ550 or GPZ550, D model, was a single year model. The KZ550 GPZ550 that was produced for 1982 and 1983 was the H model. It was stylistically different from the 1981.
The Kawasaki OEM part number for the 1981 GPZ 550 {KZ550D} flywheel or generator cover shown above is 14031-1066. It has “Kawasaki” cast into the center and is only applicable to this year.
The OEM part number for the 1982 and 1983 GPZ 550 {KZ550H} cover is 14031-1078. It applies to either year. This cover is black and devoid of additional ornamentation.
A little more research reveals that the bikes share the same generator {21050-1019} and stator {21003-1038}. Also, while the covers look different they use the same gasket {11060-1055} and four similar 6×40 metric bolts to attach to the engine.
This leads me to believe that this was a style change only and the later model cover can be used on the earlier bike, as long as you reuse your original bolts.
