Cable Routing Problem
Question: The engine idle speed increases up to 2X when the fork is turned right or left. With the fork at center and idle speed normal, moving throttle and choke cables has no effect. What do I try next? {John, TN 1982 Suzuki GS650GLZ - stock} Answer:You are one the right track. We are just about 100% sure that you have a cable routing or cable tension issue. Remember that cables are meant to be anchored. If you cut the zip ties or clamps when you changed a cable & never replaced them, this could be causing your problem.
Check the following:1. The only way to verify that it is not the throttle or choke cables is to disconnect both the throttle and choke cables and turn the handlebars {forks}.
2. Check the routing of the tachometer, clutch and throttle cables. They may be mis-routed. Check for friction against the outer casing.
3. Look up under the fuel tank to see where the cables may be binding. You may be looking at the internal cable movement, but it could be the cable housing that is binding.
4. The throttle cable tension could be too tight. When you rotate the throttle with your wrist, you need more free play before tension is felt. Try adjusting it. It may make the engine RPMs too low but leave it that way. Instead raise the RPMs with the idle control knob under the carbs.
