Question:
- I am try to replace a speedometer cable on my motorcycle and I have a problem. It appears that the previous cable had the tip break off in the meter gear located in the front wheel. If I take off the wheel and brake plate will there be a way to extract the meter gear so I can retrieve the metal piece? {Jim, NH ~ 1981

Answer:
- The schematic below shows your front wheel. Number 16 in the schematic is the speedometer drive. Your piece of metal should be able to be accessed by removing the speedometer drive.
I can’t tell from the fiche if it is hollow or not. Some are, some aren’t. If the back is hollow, the piece may come right out.
After removing the speedometer drive, use a soft bristled brush to clean the dirt & grit off it it. You may have to tap it on a workbench to dislodge the piece. A little WD-40 may help.
If it is not hollow and won’t come out you can drill a small hole in the backside of the drive and drive out the piece of the broken speedometer cable.
A “duster” can of compressed air may be of assistance in pushing it out.
