Question:
Answer:
When you have a low battery the bike will be hard to start. With a weak spark, the bike will backfire. The engine is unable to burn all of the fuel efficiently and the unburnt fuel is released into the exhaust as black smoke.
The unburnt fuel also builds up on your spark plugs. Once your spark plugs have been fouled by unburnt gasoline they need to be replaced.
Don’t bother trying to clean them,
even if they are only a day old.
Remove and fully charge your battery. You may find that your battery will not accept the charge. In this case you may have a bad cell in the battery or it has just reached the end of its life. Replace the battery and continue.
Reinstall the battery, start the bike and check the battery voltage with a volt or multimeter.
It needs to be 12 volts or higher when running to charge the battery and operate the electrical system while the bike is running. |
I believe that when you rev the engine you will find that the voltage is going down {dropping below 12 volts}.
This means your charging system is not working properly. The bike is pulling more voltage out of the battery than the Bourget charging system is generating. |
If the multi-meter shows that the voltage is remaining above 12 volts, it is functioning as it should. It may be that your battery is weak and not holding the charge.
Leave Bourget Charging System and go to American Motorcycles
